I’ve been on a roll with homemade crackers. First I made Good Seed Crackers, then homemade whole-grain Ritz crackers, and finally a few weeks ago I made homemade cheesy crackers (aka Goldfish or Cheez-its but in different shapes). The recipe I used was:
Vegan Goldfish Crackers @ Chef Chloe
The changes I made were to use white whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose and I used real butter instead of margarine. I also did not use the food processor but instead cut in the butter using a pastry blender and stirred in the water by hand. I have serious issues with cleaning the food processor.
Then I rolled them out and cut them into fun shapes for spring. The first pan I did not poke holes in them like the Ritz crackers, but I did for the second pan. I think they worked a little better with the holes – a little crispier and less chewy.
The nutritional yeast and the turmeric gave the crackers a nice orange color. Those two along with the other spices gave them a great flavor! Everyone in the family loved them including my almost 2-year old. He called them “goldfish flavored crackers”.
I got over 100 crackers out of one recipe so they lasted us awhile. I will definitely make these again. Next time I might try decreasing the salt a bit and seeing how the flavor holds up.
They were so good I may even consider investing in a goldfish cookie cutter. It’s a little pricey at $8 but if I’m making these all the time it might be a worthwhile investment. And I may be making them a lot after reading this post:
Ever wonder why your toddler is addicted to Goldfish crackers? @ yumkid
Regardless of whether you think MSG is bad, it is an additive. I have personally experienced the “addicting” behavior it can create in my child. For awhile he only wanted to eat Goldfish and nothing else! Any time we asked him what he would like to eat he said Goldfish. Since we have stopped buying them he has not been talking about Goldfish as much. Hopefully we are getting him focused on real food at a young age.

I also wanted to share that my post on homemade toilet bowl cleaner was recently featured on the website Home Tips World. I am very honored that they chose my post for their website. There are a lot of really neat DIY and homemade ideas on there so go check it out. Two that I liked were:
