Attention anyone living in southern KC on the Kansas side! Tomorrow, April 17th, the Overland Park farmers’ market is officially open. I am going and I’m super excited!
Even though I have my own garden, I like to frequent farmers’ markets to fill in the gaps. Shopping at farmers’ markets is beneficial in so many ways. Here are three:
- Support local farmers and local business
- Produce grown on small, local farms is usually grown with sustainable practices
- Local food does not travel far to get to your plate, therefore using less fuel
What are other benefits of shopping at farmers’ markets? Let me know in the comments.
I strongly encourage everyone to visit a farmers’ market. It is so much fun. I enjoy talking to the farmers and getting out in the community. Some farmers’ markets even have live music or performers. Some markets include other vendors besides farmers like bakeries or handmade crafts.
Since its early in the season there won’t be a ton of produce at the market right now. But you should be able to find some spring crops like asparagus, peas, lettuce, spinach, and other greens. Go check it out and try something new!
To find a farmers market in your area go to www.localharvest.org and search by your zip code. Support local farms!
