Heart Pasta and Homemade Breadsticks

For Valentine’s Day MIL gave us a bag full goodies.  Two of those goodies were heart shaped pasta and Dave’s Gourmet heirloom tomato sauce.

We decided to have them for dinner last night.  I also made homemade garlic breadsticks and vegan parmesan cheese.

The breadsticks recipe I used was Quick and Easy Garlic Breadsticks from Hillbilly Housewife.  I’m not going to repost the recipe because I followed her directions exactly.  So click the link to her recipe and a new window will open.  You can read the recipe on her website and then come back over here to see pictures.

I used 1 1/2 cups white flour and 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour.  I also used soy milk and garlic salt instead of garlic powder & salt (only because I did not have any garlic powder).  I did use real butter because we have a bunch that needs to be used, but you could easily substitute Earth Balance if you want.

Here’s the butter in the pan.  Watch to make sure it doesn’t burn.  I almost burned mine.  You might want to take the pan out before the butter is all the way melted and let it finish melting on the stovetop.

The dough all rolled out into a rectangle:

In the pan, cutting into strips with a pizza cutter.  Be careful because the pan is hot.  I wanted to steady my hand on the side of pan while cutting and almost burned myself!

Butter oozing through:

All done.  Nice and brown.

I also made vegan parmesan cheese using this recipe from Oh She Glows.  It was so easy!  All you need is seasame seeds, nutritional yeast and salt.  I made a half batch of her recipe in the Magic Bullet.  I forgot to take a picture of it by itself, but you can see it sprinkled on top of the pasta:

Isn’t the heart pasta cute?  Here’s everything together:

This meal turned out great!  The sauce was really delicious.  It tasted like the homemade stuff we have in our freezer.   Of course I checked out the ingredients and everything was all natural.  No crap!  I will consider trying other kinds of Dave’s Gourmet sauce now.  I checked out the website and they have a few different varieties.

The breadsticks were awesome!  Really easy and tasty.  I will definitely make these again.  Next time I will try using only half a stick of butter or margarine though to make it a smidge healthier.

Finally, the vegan parmesan was fantastic!  I really, really liked it.  It doesn’t taste exactly like cheese, but it had a great flavor.  A little bit nutty.  It had the same texture as parmesan cheese and was perfect sprinkled on top of pasta.

Happy Friday!  I hope you have something fun planned for this weekend!
